This program will reset the Desktop Databases (DTDBs) on each mounted volume. It is somewhat like the Desktop Reset™ extension except that it is an application. Before running the program, however, you should eject all floppy disks and read-only disks (like CD-ROMs), and quit all running applications.

  5. After running Reset DTDBs, the computer will restart. The Finder will rebuild all the desktop files from scratch. The process is then finished; the databases have been totally rebuilt.

A new feature as of version 2.1 is Silent Running mode, enabled by clicking the "Quit & run silently next time" button on the main screen. This is convenient for running Reset DTDBs via some sort of automated process. To disable Silent Running mode, hold down Shift when you start up Reset DTDBs.

I haven't tested this program very extensively, but I have a total of 658 (!) items inside my System Folder, and it works on my machine... :-) Even so, no warranties are provided. If you are having trouble with it, or if you are interested in suggesting a feature, I will take questions via email at one of my addresses at the end of this document.

  13. One known problem is with At Ease. At Ease will not allow you to rebuild your desktop files at all, even if you hold Option+Command at startup. Therefore, you need to disable At Ease before you can successfully run Reset DTDBs. You can enable it again afterwards.

  15. It is unclear whether Reset DTDBs works with later versions of the Mac OS™, but I have System 7.1, and it works fine with that.

  19. Reset DTDBs was written in Symantec C™ 6.0.1. Source code should be included in the archive along with the program. Feel free to use this code in your own programs, but please obey the usage rules outlined in the comment at the beginning of the source file.

  29. 2.0: Changed dialog text. It proved to freak out some users, and that's definitely not a Good Thing. Also changed it so that you don't need to hold Option+Command when you start up. (Changed from PBDTReset to PBDTDelete.)

  31. 2.1: Added a feature requested by a user, which I call "Silent Running" mode. With it you can make Reset DTDBs reset first, and ask questions never. (Ok, that was a silly pun.)
